Chin Implant Surgery (Chin Augmentation) Worldwide

Anyone looking to balance their facial features, or strengthen the definition around their jawline is a good candidate for chin implants. Cosmetic surgeons consider several factors when determining if the patient is healthy enough to receive a chin implant, including their chance of infection, their age, their ability to recover effectively, and if the chin implant will achieve their end goal. Good candidates for chin implants have finished growing, are past the puberty stage as those who are not risk their implant restricting their growth, or becoming damaged during their rapid growth. Chin Implant Procedures Chin implant surgery can be performed by a plastic surgeon or cosmetic surgeon in a hospital or at their office. Anesthesia is required, although usually only light general anesthesia is administered. Some patients choose to use local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia, which is a decision that is decided prior to the day of surgery by the facial augmentation surgeon and the patient. After the patient has received anesthesia an incision will be made on the inside of the mouth, directly above the chin, or in some cases, under the jawline. This incision allows the plastic surgeon to create a pocket. After an appropriate sized pocket is created, the chin implant can be inserted and either bolted or medically glued into place. The cosmetic surgeon will then stitch up the opening and monitor the patient until they are ready to leave the surgery center. Patients receiving a chin implant should plan to have someone drive them home and stay with them for a few days after the surgery as they might feel disoriented or groggy. Patients must allow time for chin implants to set and settle into place. Patients may be required to stick to a liquid diet until the tenderness has abated enough to chew and swallow food. If the patient received stitches outside of the mouth, they must return to the cosmetic surgeons office to have them removed approximately one week after the surgery. The cosmetic surgeon will want to see the patient frequently to make sure that the implant is settling into place, there are no infections, and that the patient is not experiencing any out of the ordinary symptoms. Risks and side effects of chin implants are small compared to other surgeries. Tenderness and swelling at the site of the incision, and around the pocket created by the facial surgeon are not uncommon. There is a minor risk of infection, as with all surgeries, and the plastic surgeon may prescribe antibiotic medication to ensure that infection does not present within the patient.
