About Orthopedic Surgeons
Definition
Orthopedic surgery is concerned with correcting problems and damage to the bones, joints and ligaments that can restrict mobility and cause pain. Orthopedic problems commonly affect athletes and the elderly as excess use of the joints can cause the ligaments to tear, rupture and bones to weaken. Orthopedic surgery has advanced greatly and many procedures can now be performed using a laparoscopic approach to minimize scaring and make surgery less invasive. If you experience pain in joints or restricted movement, a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon may be able to diagnose the problem. Back pain, shoulder pain, knee and hip pain is generally the main focus of orthopedic treatment. Orthopedic surgeons also treat problems in the wrist, elbow and ankle.
Hip Replacement
Pain in your hip joint affects your ability to move freely and can make it difficult to perform normal everyday activities. Hip pain can be caused by arthritis, a fracture or break or a medical condition which has weakened your joint. If your hip is causing you severe pain a hip replacement could be best form of treatment. Hip replacement surgery works by removing the damaged cartilage and bone and replacing the hip joint with a prosthetic implant.
Knee Replacement
Chronic pain in the knees can be caused by arthritis, a fracture, break or a medical condition which has weakened your joint. If the pain in your knee is not helped by anti-inflammatory tablets and it is increasingly difficult to perform everyday activities such as standing, bending and light walking, knee replacement surgery might be the treatment option you need.
Total joint replacement
Painful joints impair the quality of life you lead. Whether caused by arthritis, a degenerative or genetic condition or diseases such as cancer, pain in the joints limits mobility and can lead to other medical problems such as obesity. Total joint replacement is an orthopedic procedure to remove the damaged joint and replace it with a prosthetic device that replicates the movement and stability of the joint.
