About Oncologists
Definition
Oncology is the medical term for cancer and oncologists are the dedicated specialists who work towards helping patients overcome the many forms of cancer. Cancer can affect any area of the body and oncologists are trained to diagnose cancer in the earliest stages to prevent the advancement of the disease. Treatment for cancer takes many guises. Commonly, removal of the tumor and a course of chemotherapy and radiation therapy will be advised to remove the cancer and prevent the spread of any remaining cancerous cells. Oncologists offer patients the latest advancements in cancer care and treatment to ensure the strongest chance of overcoming the disease.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is a combination of drugs used to fight cancer cells in the body. Chemotherapy prevents the cancer cells from multiplying and can often be effective at putting cancer into remission.
Chemotheapy is used to control cancer and stop the spread of the disease and as a palative remedy to ease the symptoms of cancer. Chemotherapy is frequently used alongside radiation therapy to treat cancer, or before surgery to shrink cancerous tumours.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy targets cancer cells directly, using high doses of radiation to prevent the cells from dividing. Radiation oncologists can administer radiation to cancer cells externally or internally.
Diagnosing cancer
There are more than 200 types of recognised cancer and more strains of the disease are diagnosed frequently. As cancer cells can develop in and affect any part of the body, no one test in conclusive in diagnosing all types of cancer. If you are experiencing symptoms that suggest cancer may be present, oncologists will run a series of tests before making a diagnosis. Screening for cancer may include blood tests, a cell biopsy, or slightly more invasive tests such as a tumour biopsy.
