The Benefits of Having a Pet

| November 22nd, 2011

People have been caring for animals since the beginning of time, and the special bond between humans and pets comes with some amazing health benefits. Not only are pets great companions, they also can lower blood pressure, decrease anxiety and stress, and they can also boost our immune systems. According to WebMD, fuzzy friends like cats and dogs can actually reduce a child’s risk for allergies, eczema and asthma. The exposure that babies have with their pets strengthens their immune system more than households without animals.

Studies have also shown that pets benefit people with Alzheimer’s, AIDS and depression. Simply petting or playing with an animal releases feel-good hormones that reduce stress and increase levels of calmness, which is especially great after having a bad day. Research has also shown that in general, animal-lovers live longer, healthier lives than people without pets. Animals are indeed amazing creatures, but who knew they were so good for our physical and mental health?
