Fructose linked to prostate cancer

By Brandie Umar - Executive Director of Content | August 3rd, 2010

Doctors have long warned of the health problems caused by excess sugar in a persons diet but according to new research, the type of sugar consumed may be just as important as the amount.

When a cancerous tumor develops, stopping or delaying its growth is vital to providing a cure through treatment. Limiting the dietary factors that can accelerate cancer cell production can provide vital time for doctors treating the tumor.

Knowing sugar is a major accelerator for tumor growth and prostate cancer in particular, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles analyzed the effect of glucose compared to fructose.

The results showed that fructose actively encourages the multiplication of prostate cancer cells as prostate tumors metabolize fructose rapidly.

The research showed that the body metabolizes sugars in different ways. In the USA, fructose is one of the most highly consumed sugars. Soft drinks are notoriously flavored with fructose and concerns of the amount of fructose corn syrup in the average American diet has led several states to impose taxes on fructose based products. Based on the latest research, eliminating refined sugar such as corn syrup and fructose in other forms is not only beneficial to health by helping reduce daily calorie intake but could also help prevent against certain types of cancers.
