Top 3 Cancers That Strike Men: Learn the Warning Signs

By Kai Wade - Director of Communications & Social Media | August 15th, 2014

Invisibility is non-existent, particularly when it comes to one’s health. It is important for all men to learn and detect the warning signs — to help defend against cancer.

Prostate Cancer: Typically there are no warning signs for prostate cancer. A digital rectal exam can tell if your prostate is hard or irregular, and if cancer is suspected with a high PSA (prostate specific antigen) level.

Lung Cancer: There are not typically any warning sign with lung cancer, however if you have developed a cough that won’t subside —or one that induces blood—it is often evidence the cancer is present. Another early warning sign is “chest pain that's continuously present and not influenced by movement,” states Ezra Cohen, M.D., a medical oncologist at University of Chicago Medical Center.

Colorectal Cancer: If you have blood in the stool, never ignore this premature warning sign, even if it only happens one time. “It could be a precancerous polyp leaking blood, and bleeding is the only early warning you'll receive. In more than half of cases, there is no sign,” states Greg Enders, M.D., Ph.D., a gastroenterologist at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
