Binge Snacking on Super Bowl Sunday

| February 3rd, 2012

Super Bowl Sunday 2012 is only 3 days away!

The grocery stores will be packed, dips will be made, and couches around the U.S will be occupied with millions of Americans indulging in the biggest football event of the year.

It's reported that 30 million pounds of snack food will be consumed this Sunday, according to the Calorie Control Council and the Snack Food Association. That's 11.2 million potato chips, 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips, 4.3 million pounds of pretzels, 3.8 million pounds of popcorn, and 2.5 million pounds of nuts. And this does not take in to account the home cooked goodies!

Pizza and wings are the foods of choice.  Pizza delivery joints report that pizza orders for Sunday begin on Friday night or early in the week.

If a Pizza is ordered on game day it could be up to a 2 hour wait.  According to New River Pizza in Fort Lauderdale, a busy Friday night means an average of 350 deliveries. On Super Bowl Sunday, the owner reports the restaurant will make more than 600 Super Bowl day pizzas.

Although the social event brings family and friends together, with it comes health risks.  Binging on snack foods, pizza, and beer can cause weight gain, effect your cholesterol and make you feel sluggish. The average fan will take in 1,200 calories and 50 grams of fat. These high-fat or high-carb foods can cause sinus infections and cold, indigestion, heartburn, or even a heart attack.

So, if one of your 2012 New Years resolutions was to drop the pounds; either take it easy this Super Bowl Sunday or plan on a heavy work out the following weeks!

Good luck teams!
