The largest study to date analysing the success of gastric bypass surgery across social demographics has found that women respond better to gastric bypass surgery, with far fewer post-surgery complications than male gastric bypass patients.
Researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center followed 38,000 patients to compile the data for the study. As well as concluding that females suffer fewer post-surgery complications, the study also showed a difference between ethnic groups with Caucasian and Hispanic patients responding better than African Americans. The study also supported recent studies which show a greater weight loss in younger patients than older patients.
The results of the study were released at the 27th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Women are 25% less likely to suffer complications and the overall cost of hospital bills reduced by $1000. The reason for the discrepencies in responses to gastric bypass surgery were not determined, however it was found that men are twice as likely to suffer from obesity related disease pre-surgery which could impact on the post-surgery complications.
