Facial Hair Restoration

Facial hair restoration is a procedure designed to restore hair to the eyebrow, eyelash, beard, sideburns or mustache region to thicken existing hair or to provide hair growth where there is none. Facial hair balding and thinning could either be due to genetics, plucking, prior electrolysis, prior laser hair removal, trauma from surgery, burns, or other accidents.

A Good Candidate For Facial Hair Restoration

Each year, about 4 million people face the reality that their eyebrow hair is thinning, and as a result, causing bald spots in their brows. The most common cause of eyebrow hair loss in women is over-plucking, which creates scar tissue, damaging the hair follicle and leading to the complete loss of hair growth.

Another factor leading to eyebrow hair loss is advancing age, where patients in their 50’s and 60’s begin to experience hair thinning, even in the eyebrow area. It may come as a surprise, but men and women are equally as susceptible to this, with more and more men having eyebrow hair transplants. While some patients look to have the procedure to enhance their facial features, others seek eyebrow hair transplantation for bald spots caused by trauma, burns, or even medical treatments.

For others, eyebrow hair loss may be genetic, with thin eyebrows, small bald spots, or non-existent eyebrows. Loss of eyebrow hair is also associated with Alopecia Areata and other systemic diseases such as thyroid disorders.  Eyebrow hair transplant is also used to soften the flat and bare look of tattooed eyebrows, restoring the natural three-dimension of the eyebrows.

Whether through genetics, trauma or surgery, the inability to grow facial hair is a problem for many men. These men report that their lack of facial hair weakens their self-esteem and that they desire a more masculine look.

Facial Hair Restoration Procedure

For mustache and beard hair transplants, the donor hair come from the scalp, which are essentially identical in texture and growth to facial hair. Once transplanted, the hairs are permanent and can be groomed just as the rest of the facial hair.

To provide a completely natural appearance, the hairs are transplanted as one or two hair grafts. The hair grafts are placed at the exact angle of growth of the surrounding facial hair, having as few incisions as possible as to minimize scarring, and even aesthetic distribution of existing gray hair into the restored areas.
