Dermabrasion Defined

Dermabrasion is a treatment used by dermatologists to improve the appearance and texture of skin. The treatment is used to minimise the appearance of scars caused by acne, sun damage, tattoo scars and can also be a solution to fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Dermabrasion procedures are intensive and your dermatologist may recommend micro-dermabrasion, an alternative milder treatment. Dermabrasion is commonly used to improve the texture of facial skin or rid of visible facial aging

Dermabrasion Procedure

The area of skin will be cleaned and numbed using a local anesthetic. The dermatologist will then remove the outer layers of the patients skin using a rotary instrument with a wire brush that rotates rapidly. The instrument is moved backwards and forwards across the skin with varying amounts of pressure applied until the outer layers have been removed.

Dermabrasion Results

Dermabrasion is an intensive treatment that removes the top layers of skin. Following the procedure skin will be red and will be painful until the new skin grows back. Skin regrowth normally begins within 3-5 days and the skin develops a normal color.

Once the healing process is complete patients are advised to avoid direct sunlight for three months following the procedure.

Cost Of Dermabrasion

The cost of dermabrasion depends on the intensity of your treatment and the location you have the treatment.

Micro-Dermabrasion

Micro-dermabrasion is a skin care treatment used to smooth wrinkles, acne scars and correct sun damage that has left skin blotchy. Micro dermabrasion is a less intensive alternative to dermabrasion that is suitable for sensitive skin.
