Wisdom Tooth Extraction Defined

Wisdom tooth extraction can be extremely painful as they start to protrude through the gum line. Wisdom teeth can also cause problems for your existing teeth if there is not enough room in your jawline to support a third molar. Failing to take note of your wisdom teeth could lead to further orthodontic treatment down the road. The most common dental solution to treat problematic wisdom teeth is the surgical removal of the molar during a routine dental surgery.

A Good Candidate For Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth are also known as 'adult' teeth because they do not start to protrude into the mouth until adolescence. Everyone has four wisdom teeth in the back corners of their mouths.

Many people have problems with wisdom teeth because there is not enough room in the gum for the extra teeth. If your mouth is too small to accommodate your wisdom teeth, as they begin to protrude through the gum wisdom teeth can cause existing teeth to move.To prevent wisdom teeth damaging the alignment of teeth, dentists will remove one or more wisdom teeth.

Commonly, the surgical extraction of wisdom teeth is performed because the teeth become stuck in the gum and cannot fully protrude. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain and discomfort and the only dental treatment is the removal of the tooth/teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth can be stuck in the jaw itself or just underneath the gum line.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure

Wisdom tooth extraction is a dental surgery procedure. Dentists first numb the mouth by injecting a local anesthetic into the gum. Once the area is anesthetized, an incision will be made in the gum to expose the root of the tooth. The tissue connecting the tooth to the jawbone is pulled back and the tooth is removed using dental forceps. The incision is sealed with stitches. Swelling in the mouth will subside 2-3 days post-surgery.

Cost Of Wisdom Tooth Extraction

The price of dental treatments varies depending on the location of the dental clinic and the amount of dental work needed. Typically wisdom tooth extractions cost $100 and $400 per tooth.
