Porcelain Inlays And Onlays Defined

There is no need for you to put off visiting the dentist now to fix your teeth if you need fillings and you want that improved look for your smile. Dentists now are placing more and more porcelain inlays and onlays, which gives your teeth strength and beauty.

The key to preventing tooth decay is early detection which is imperative to stop the spread which will cause cavities. The main issue with a cavity is that it weakens the tooth and could lead to the loss of the tooth. With the use of porcelain inlays and/or onlays, your dentist will be able to restore the tooth strength, remove and eliminate tooth decay and give you a smile to be proud of.

Having the porcelain inlays or onlays procedure done by your dentist is a simple procedure and will only differ subject to the area where the affected tooth is located. The procedure is non-invasive and your dentist will only use this for areas where the teeth have decay present. The advantage is that no healthy tooth structure will be affected by the procedure. The inlays and onlays are custom made by a dental lab ensuring a perfect fit in the space where the decayed tissue was removed.

The onlays and inlays are made of the finest high grade porcelain which looks and feels like a natural tooth material. Previously filling material that were popular with dentists, prior to dentistry lab improvements, was amalgam which did not have the same natural look and feel as porcelain. Porcelain inlays and onlays are far healthier for the teeth than amalgam. The reason for this is that amalgam fillings are made from 50% mercury which is highly toxic for the human body. Studies have also shown that patients, some not all, are allergic to amalgam. The technology of today is porcelain onlays and inlays,  ensuring that amalgam has no place in the future of reconstructive dentistry techniques.

The most important part of a dentist using porcelain inlays and onlays is that the patient benefits from a far mare natural looking filling than amalgam. One of the key benefits for the patient is the porcelain onlays and inlays are they are as strong as natural tooth enamel. With this technology the dentist enables patients to have nearly undetectable filings and tooth repairs that will restore strength to your teeth helping you achieve a dazzling smile which is what all patients want to achieve.

Porcelain Inlays And Onlays Procedure

Inlays and onlays do not require a lot of preparatory work on the broken tooth needing repair. Teeth do not need to be reshaped as with dental crowns, because the onlay or inlay is custom-made to fit and then bonded to the existing tooth.

Dentists will take an impression of the tooth needing restoration and send the impression to a laboratory for the dental inlay to be made in your chosen material. Resin or porcelain is used to create the inlay/onlay depending on the placement in the mouth and the cosmetic appearance desired. Porcelain provides the most natural look.

After the impression has been taken of the tooth, a temporary sealant is applied which is removed when you return for the actual restoration of the tooth. Once the dental technicians have created your restoration, your dentist will remove the temporary filling and check the fit of the restoration to ensure it is comfortable. The inlay/onlay will then be attached to the tooth using dental resins before the tooth is polished.

Cost Of Porcelain Inlays And Onlays

The price of dental inlays and onlays varies depending on the material used to make the restoration and the amount of dental work required to prepare the teeth beforehand. As dental inlays and onlays can strengthen as well as repair teeth, choosing this type of restorative dentistry treatment can save you money in the long-term as you are likely to need less dental work later. Averagely, dental inlays/onlays cost between $500 and $1300.
