Unfortunately for majority of obese patients, dieting will produce transient, temporary weight loss.

International guidelines suggest that patients can maintain a weight loss of 10-12 kg only over a period of five years. Trials have shown that bariatric surgery results in greater weight loss than diet and exercise. This weight loss is permanent if patient adheres to advice of their nutritionist and surgeon.

Importantly, surgery reduces the risk of death due to obesity and obesity related health problems which is not achieved with diet and exercise.
