What can I eat after gastric bypass? - Weight Loss Surgery (Bariatric Surgery)

What can I eat after gastric bypass?

The gastric balloon I had 8 years ago helped me loose some weight but as soon as it was removed (for health reasons) the weight started to come back again and I could never reach a low enough weight to make y healt improve so I'm taking the plunge and going for a bypass in November. I'm trying really hard to get prepared physically and mentally before and exercise every day as well as eating healthier foods to hopefully loose a little weight before the surgery. What I'd like to know is what I can eat after? Straight after the balloon I could eat normal food again straight away just smaller amounts but i think with the bypass it's more restrictive? Will I be given a diet plan from a doctor?I need to prepare because I will still need to feed my family during the recovery period. Any advice from anyone who's had the surgery would be great

The guidelines for post-bariatric surgery eating vary for individual patients. Bariatric surgeons can explain in depth a post-surgery diet and the reasons for any restrictions. If you would like to contact a weight loss surgeon, you can find a list of surgeons worldwide here. As an overview guide, this may help you learn a little more about what to expect after gastric bypass.

Thank you for your question. My name is Ilhan. I am the patient coordinator for Memorial Hizmet Hospital ISTANBUL-TURKEY.The response from Dr.Tuğrul Demirel, MD,Bariatric&Metbolic Surgeon is as follows;

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass is the gold standart bariatric operation. It is a restrictive and malabsorptive combinated procedure. You can eat anything but you should not get pure starch and fat. Other wise you may have a Dumping syndrome. This happens by acute fluid distention of the allimentary loop due to hiper-osmolar contents of starch. Patients feel fatigue and vommit abondently. If you eat too much fat, then you will have major diarrhea due to fat malabsorption. These effects are the desired effects to control dietry intake. Patient should know and follow the rules in order to properly use the new physiology.
