Question about hyperparathyroidism - Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)

Question about hyperparathyroidism

My calcium level has been 9.1 to a high of 10.6 for the last 4 yrs. On 12/09 dr order PTH levels which are now done every 3 mos. PTH has been 49 to now a high of 74 (last one was 52 3 mos ago). My internist is not alarmed, but do I need to look into having a parathyroid tumor?

The answer is I would continue to follow parathyroid hormone levels considerably longer. An isolated elevation of your parathyroid hormone level is not an indication that you have a parathyroid tumor. You will have to be consistently high on more than one serum level with associated symptoms. Just follow your internist’s advice and continue getting serum blood levels or parathyroid hormone.
