Do 5 year old kids ever need root canals?

My daughter just had a filling on a baby tooth and the dentist metioned that if she continues to experience pain after the filling that she might need a root canal. Im concerned this might be a bit much for her. Do I have any other options if it comes to this?

The tooth may need root canal treatment depending on the condition of the tooth. Root canal treatment is done to avoid tooth extraction at a later stage. source: http://www.omdental.in
